NAPKIN RINGS

Table decoration with tradition

The use of napkin rings developed at the beginning of the 19th century with bourgeois table culture. In addition to their representative and order-creating function, the rings also served to distinguish napkins, because the multiple use of cloth napkins made it necessary to assign them to the respective family members. If the napkins had the same design, individual markings such as monograms or different types of napkin rings and colours were used to distinguish them.

Whereas in the past the napkin was mainly used for hygienic purposes, today's napkins also have a decorative function. At festive menus, cloth napkins ensure a high-quality and cultivated dining experience, while for parties with finger food or barbecues, a paper napkin is usually sufficient. But regardless of their material, the napkins are stylishly held together and shaped by the decorative rings and original ribbons.

The unique napkin rings from uccellino set effective accents on every table and convince with their simple elegance. From modern to rustic, you will find napkin rings from our brand to match your tableware. The napkin holders are available in sets of two or four and are a popular gift idea for every season.

Function of napkin rings

A napkin ring is an object similar to a ring that holds napkins laid on the table together, usually in a rolled form. Napkin rings are suitable for high-quality cloth napkins as well as disposable paper napkins. Napkin rings are a beautiful addition to dinnerware and are used both at parties and at everyday meals. Although not everyone is designed in a typical ring shape, the practical accessories can be used to conjure up an unusual flair.

The design on the set table can be rounded off with details such as the matching candlestick or a vase with colour-coordinated flowers. As a stylish addition to the dining table and kitchen, the design rings make an excellent contribution to the decorative table design and can even replace classic decoration. Depending on preference, the table can be set with napkin holders made of different materials and colours. For example, different shades of merino wool or steel wire can be combined and give the decoration an interesting and individual look.

Material, colour and shape

In the beginning, napkin rings were usually made of porcelain to match the serving dishes. Today, they are made of different materials and are available in all colours and shapes. At uccellino you will find not only classic napkin rings but also creative variants. We use the natural and high-quality materials wood, leather, natural stone, organic cotton, merino wool and steel wire. Our model made of coiled steel wire is a classic ring into which the rolled-up napkin is placed. The handmade product follows a discreet and practical design and can be combined with all table decorations due to its simple and at the same time exclusive shape. The rings are available in the colours silver and brass.

The napkin rings made of dyed laminated wood are given a unique pattern by the different layers of colour in the wood. Even the front and back of a ring differ in colour structure and grain. The model with a flat and round finish resembles a CD shape, while the waisted version gives the wooden ring a lively character. The rings made of river stone are also designed similar to a flat disc and cut from one piece. The rim with its untreated stone surface contrasts with the smooth side parts. This fine cut reveals the different shades of colour, each stone with its different colour and shape being unique.

The crocheted ring made of one hundred percent merino wool encloses the napkin with its felted end strings. Due to the handmade production, small deviations in size and width are inevitable. The napkin rings are available in all twenty colours of our merino wool and always make for an original table decoration with their muted and bold colours. The iconic denim napkin rings are also casually tied around the napkin like a belt. As an unconventional table decoration, the ribbons with their eyelets, buckles and loops are an absolute highlight and exude an individual and noble ambience! The napkin ring made of brown nubuck leather is an aesthetic accessory for all culinary experiences. It is placed loosely around the napkin and wrapped with both strings.

Cleaning and care

Depending on the material of the napkin ring, it requires individual care. Some rings can be cleaned in the dishwasher and others under lukewarm dishwater. Organic cotton denim can be put in the washing machine at 40 °C and merino wool at 30 °C on the wool wash cycle. Nubuck leather, on the other hand, is not machine-washable. Only rub it by hand with a damp cloth.

Napkin rings made of river stone are very easy to clean thanks to their repellent surface, especially as they are also dishwasher-safe. Products made of steel and wood are also easy to clean. After use, you should rinse them under running water. The use of natural washing-up liquid is optional here. You can also use a dishwashing brush or a root brush to clean the gaps in the models made of steel wire. Then rub the rings with a cloth and make sure that they are completely dry, especially in the case of wooden rings. Products made of wood should generally not be put in the dishwasher, as heat and prolonged exposure to water in the dishwasher can make them brittle and deform them.

Tips: To ensure that wooden napkin rings retain their natural shine, you should rub them with a thin layer of oil from time to time. We offer our wood oil in a small bottle for this purpose. Alternatively, you can use sunflower, paraffin or olive oil, for example.
