UNITE DESIGN AND ART - CLEAR
LINKING CLARITY TO HARMONY – ABSOLUTELY
BRINGING THE FEELING OF LIFE AND HARMONY TOGETHER – OF COURSE
The designer behind the label uccellino is Ulrike Plüschau. With her clear and timeless style, she designs and produces unique pieces of furniture, extraordinary home accessories and beautiful decorative items for the table in her Hamburg manufactory. As a learned fashion designer, she has a trained eye for shapes and is sensitive to the hidden treasures of nature, which is reflected in her selection of materials. Her objective to create stable values and move away from the throwaway society we live in and the fast-paced rhythm of the fashion industry, led her to the exploration of entirely new materials.
What started in 2006 as a small project in a shed behind the house quickly developed into something bigger. A very own collection of design was created, a larger workshop was needed, and a number of publications began to appear in home design magazines. During that time, the uccellino brand emerged and it is now represented at international trade fairs from Frankfurt and Paris to Tokyo and sold in specialty stores and boutiques worldwide.
The brand´s sophisticated designs aren´t solely develop at the desk, but rather where chips fall and machines run. This is where the inspiration arises to move away from the norm as well as to create products that allow the exquisite materials and their beauty speak for themselves - the fusion of design and craftsmanship. Quite frequently, personal demands on the high quality of the materials and their processing pose challenges for the professionals - however, "can't be done" does not exist!
The finishing of raw materials is still done by hand in the company´s own workshop, which always leads to the discovery of new surfaces and structures. The awareness of shapes and the appreciation of nature can be found in all products. And instead of following trends, Ulrike always sets her own direction in style direction with her designs.
But to ucccellino the development of products, from design to sales, is just as important as long-term and trusting cooperation with suppliers and customers. uccellino´s design is characterized by innovative ideas with a clear and timeless design language and captures the spirit of the times.
The design speaks a uniform language: NATURE IS NOBLE, MODERN AND STRONG!
And in the end, casual luxury from Hamburg is created...
THE LONGING FOR ÄSTEHETICS CONNECTS
ALL PEOPLE WITH THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LANGUAGE IN THE WORLD - NATUR
Our claim is to create beautiful things with which we want to grow old...
For us, the basis for this are timeless forms in combination with high-quality and natural materials, which gain beauty and character through the aging process.
Our products are allowed to evolve and are by no means "finished" when they leave our manufactory. Wood is a living material and continues to breathe even after its processing.
Cracks in the wood are for us a stylistic element that can change again and again over time, as well as the color of the wood changes over the years due to sunlight..
We think along with the use - and create designs to live with.
We value handicraft tradition and live the exchange of knowledge with our suppliers and are always curious about what is still possible. We love the challenge of playing with materials and shapes, as well as deviating from common standards. Our ambition is to bring design and art together and integrate them into everyday life.
Nature is our master, from her we let ourselves be inspired and guided.
We make furniture for people who share our appreciation of nature and its beauty. Who, together with us, want to counteract fast-moving trends, plastic floods and the general disposable culture with more sustainable and stable values. As a company, we are very conscious of our responsibility towards the resources of the earth and our fellow human beings, especially in these times.
Our actions are sustainable and long-term.
The selection of our manufacturers* and products is made after careful examination and our selection criteria are based on the principle of reconciling beauty and goodness with fair trade and cooperation.
We also like to present craftsmen and suppliers with new challenges. In close cooperation and our own research, we have accumulated a great deal of expertise over the years, which we can draw on.
LUFTHANSA FIRST CLASS DINING EXPIRIENCE
In 2019 uccellino received the iF Design Award as well as the Red Dot Design Award for outstanding product design that was specially designed and produced for the airline Lufthansa. Since pure wooden plates are not permitted in on-board catering, the designer Ulrike Plüschau designed a so-called snack plate made of ash wood, which is elegantly composed with porcelain attachment.
Lufthansa offers first-class passengers a special on-board service and restaurant-like dining experience. As part of the dine-on-demand project, travelers can choose their individual dishes from the service cart. As a modern interpretation of a traditional hearty snack, the wooden board is ideal offering globetrotters cold cuts such as cheese or sausage. Another part of the concept is the starter plate from Dibbern´s Fine Bone China collection, which contains three small bowls for salads and appetizers, thus allowing the combination of different dishes.
Since 1953,iF Design has stood as a symbol of excellent design all over the world. Emerging from the "Special Show of Shape-Appropriate Industrial Products", the iF Product Design Award is one of the world´s largest and most renowned design awards today.
Since 1955, the Designzentrum Nordrhein-Westfalen" has also been awarding the famous "red dot" for outstanding product design: The Red Dot Design Award has established itself internationally as one of the most sought-after seals of quality for good design.

Each one is like a „sculpture“ and unique in color, size and shape...
Agaves grow up very slowly and flower only once in their lifetimes. From seedling to the bloom more than 30 years can pass, depending on soil and climatic conditions. The flower stalks can reach a height of up to 10 meters and are found in the centre of the plant. The plant itself dies after the blossom and the seeding.
There are approximately 600 types of agaves, one of which is the sisal agaves. It was cultivated in the early 1900's especially for the rope production. Shortly afterwards, chemical rope production was discovered and the sisal agaves quickly fell into oblivion. By extreme solar irradiation and the salty air these agaves have been conserved through decades; now parched and lignified.
We use these unique pieces of nature to produce hand-made pieces of art like our Deco Vase Tindaya and the Object candles Daya. Every piece has its own story to tell!
We have to thank nature for these fantastic and unique forms!
Stones that can be found in the wild nature
As a naturally occurring material, river stones are unique in shape, color and structure. And as individual as each single stone is, so special are our handmade products made of it.
On the surface, the river stones are all inconspicuous gray and beige. But with the grinding, the inner life of the stone comes to light and surprises again and again with hidden color nuances and unique structures. Our two types of stone are river and mountain stones, which differ in both surface texture and color. The sand-colored river stone is smooth and fine-pored on the surface due to flowing water, and brings out shades of color from light brown to dark green with the grinding of the stone inner surface. The rather gray mountain stone is rough and coarse-pored on the surface, thus appears somewhat more rustic and brings out colors from light gray to black after grinding the stone interior.
Riverstone, unlike other natural stones, is rather insensitive and easy to clean.
The stone is cold and heat resistant from -20°C to +200°C, which allows our plates, platters and bowls to be either preheated or precooled. This keeps many a dessert cold longer and soup warm longer.
Riverstone products can be placed in the dishwasher, are more acid-resistant than other natural stones, and are largely scratch-resistant.
190 million years old - and still up to date!
There are many different types of slate around the world. The slate chosen by uccellino comes from Germany and due to its composition and formation is not an oil shale, but an asphalt-gray to deep black bituminous mudstone from the early Jurassic period. About 190 million years ago in the Middle Ages, more precisely in the Lias Epsilon, the Lias Sea or also called Jurassic Sea extended over a wide area. When the water masses once flowed into the open sea, huge layers of mud were left behind. Large numbers of marine animals were caught and trapped by the silt. The dead animals were soon covered and preserved by the washed-in clays and limestones. Under high pressure and complete exclusion from the air, the mud was compressed layer by layer over millions of years to form Jurassic shale.
The deeper the shale is mined, the harder the rock becomes. It is known for its exceptional fossil preservation. Due to the low-oxygen and partly anoxic, so-called euxinian environment at the time of deposition, one can still find very well preserved crinoids, ammonites, fish and spectacular ichthyosaurs. After about 12 meters, the excavation reaches a horizontally bedded shale layer with an average thickness of 18 cm. In order to reach this layer, it is necessary to dig deep with the most modern machines.
uccellino uses only this particular layer, called fleist.
The small shell inclusions, also called posidonia, make each slate product unique.
We have produced exclusive home accessories from this slate like the shallow bowl Roxette and the candlesticks Cara.
Please do not put slate products in the dishwasher, but wash them by hand. Use only care products for natural stones for cleaning and refrain from all sharp and acidic cleaning agents.
A noble natural stone
No other type of stone has culturally shaped the history of mankind more clearly than this natural stone. For thousands of years, mankind has been fascinated by its unmistakable grain, which is created by the irregularity and frequency of the calcite veins, making each stone unique. Marble is created very slowly by the transformation of limestone, dolomites and other carbonate-rich rocks. The slow and ductile deformation under enormous pressure and high temperature contributes to the hardness of marble. Marble belongs to the family of soft rocks.
For our products we use the following types of marble:
Carrara Marble | stands for highest quality
Probably the largest deposit of marble in the world is located in the Tuscany region of Italy. The marble varieties from this region are called Carrara marble. This marble stands for the highest quality and is available in a variety of over 50 types. We use Carrara marble for our marble plates BATLER and the plates made of marble NOOK, as well as the marble butter dish BADI.
Nero Marquina | black elegance in natural beauty
Nero Marquina is a black limestone with white veining or texture. A combination of calcium carbonate and calcium-laden components have developed over thousands of years into a hard natural stone that can house fossils or shells inside. The unusual black coloration of Nero Marquina is due to natural accumulations of bitumen.
Ebano Marble | noble and modern
Ebano marble is a first class material and has its origin in Spain. Due to its noble modern brown color with slightly beige-rose inclusions it fits into every modern ambience and can be combined very well with all wood designs.
Macarel white | the white gold of Almeria
This minimalist white natural stone comes from the Almeria region and is characterized by the purity of its white color and its delicate texture. It consists mainly of calcite, although it also contains other components such as quartz or muscovite. White Macarel is a kind of compact and medium-grained natural rock in which some greyish veins can appear, although its white color is usually homogeneous. A guarantee of quality, strength and beauty.
Marble - what makes it so expensive
The prices of marble are as different as the cost of a bottle of red wine.
There are a number of reasons for the price differences of marble.
- Its formation is a protracted natural phenomenon and its extraction is still very laborious today, which is why marble is traded as an exclusive and therefore more expensive than other natural stones.
- The hardness of the material plays just as much a role as the quality of quarrying and processing. As a natural product, not every type has the same properties in terms of appearance, character and material quality.
- Moreover, many marbles are only available in limited quantities, which also influences the value of exclusive and high-quality materials.
Marble - why does it always feel cold
Just like wood or plastic, marble takes on room temperature and thus has the same temperature as the other materials. However, when we touch an object made of wood, it appears much warmer than a marble slab. This phenomenon is caused by the different thermal conductivity of the materials.
If we touch an object that is colder than our skin, our heat is transferred to this object. Wood is a poor conductor of heat and when we touch it with our hand, the area directly under our hand heats up. However, in marble the heat is immediately dissipated and distributed, so the area under our hand cannot heat up. It withdraws even more heat from our skin and therefore appears much cooler than other materials.
A rough distinction for marble, which also has consequences for later handling (sensitivity, cleaning & care) is the surface treatment:
Marble is polished, whereby the stone is grinded with a grain size of up to 3000, the marble surface is gradually polished finer and finer, creating a silky shimmering shine. Marble rough leaves the surface usually matt and has coarse pores.
Marble - Cleaning and Care
Clean the marble stone with a damp cloth, preferably chamois leather, in gentle, circular movements to avoid scratching the stone. Then wipe the marble dry with another soft cloth.
Never clean marble with acid, as this will make the surface dull, possibly discoloring or even making holes. Suitable as a cleaning agent:
- lukewarm water mixed with mild dishwashing detergent
- Marble cleaner
- light soap
- Corn starch against grease stains
If you are unsure about the choice of your cleaning agent, try it beforehand on an invisible part of the marble. Do not use agents that are strongly alkaline, contain acids or oils. Also avoid household products such as lemon and wax, as these also cause stains.
Marble - removing scratches from surfaces
If small scratches have formed on the marble surface, it is sufficient to rub the scratch with a wet cloth and a little dishwashing detergent with gentle movements. If the scratch is no longer visible, the marble can be carefully wiped dry and then polished a little.
If the scratch is a little stronger, fine-grained sandpaper for natural stone can be used, whereby here very carefully from coarser grain to ever finer grain in no steps must be worked. Afterwards this area can be polished with marble polish to match the rest of the surface.
Wood is a living material...
and just like man it has grown over many years, has its own history and breathes!
For wood every centimeter in diameter means several years of longer growth in nature. For our solid wood products we need tree trunks with a good 300 years of growth. These must be stored outdoors for several years before processing, as technical drying is not possible in these dimensions.
Also, wood in these thicknesses cannot be dried without cracking, but these are exactly the desired stylistic elements of our minimalist solid wood products and underline the character "natural-pur".
The multiple oiled surface sets a deliberate counterpoint with its velvety soft shimmer. uccellino uses only first-class wood for durable products.
The so-called smoking is a process which, with the high tannic acid content of oak combined with ammonia as a base, causes a natural discoloration of the wood. The different warm chocolate tones are due to the different tannic acid contents of the wood. If the wood is not completely kerned, visible light sapwood zones appear after smoking. But it is precisely these light inclusions that give the products - unlike with colored woods - an unmistakable character and make each product unique. The smoking process is resistant to aging and light to a large extent and the wood becomes more supple and less brittle due to the formation of salts. The ammonia required for the production process is neutralized after smoking and converted to ammonium sulfate, which is used as a liquid fertilizer in agriculture. Thus no waste products are produced.
All solid woods are from native, sustainably managed, mostly certified (FSC-SCS + PEFC) forests and therefore reproducible.
The smoked wood does not contain any substances harmful to health.
A naturally renewable raw material!
Merino wool is an annual increasing protein fiber, which is already won over 5.000 years by the sheep. The animals originally come from the North African plateaus of the Atlas Mountains and are now one of the oldest and most resistant sheep breeds in the world. As nomination of “pure new wool” can only be called if the wool is won by shearing living and healthy sheep. It is different with the name „pure wool“. This can be won by dead or ill animals or even from recycled wool.
A raw material with fascinating qualities - high tech made by nature!
Merino wool by nature has some very beneficial properties:
It does not scratch | It warms when it is cold | It cools when it is warm | It warms when damp | It does not develop unpleasant odors even after repeated wear| It is water and dirt repellent | It is particularly light with high thermal performance | It has a natural UV protection | It does not charge electrostatical | It is flame retardant| It does not wrinkle
After shearing, the wool is sorted by color and quality and washed. Before the material can be used further, it must be loosened and combed - this process is called carding or carding. If the wool is not to retain its natural hue, this is also the time to dye it. Only then begins the actual processing of the fibers.
Care and Cleaning
To preserve all these special properties of merino wool, it should be washed as little as possible, but only brought into the fresh air to activate its self-cleaning properties. If the wool shows pilling please do not pluck it, but cut it off with scissors. Pilling is not a defect, but a sign of pure merino wool.
uccellino uses only pure merino wool for the knitted products, which is processed by hand in Germany.
Colored wood for a modern wood look
For the products of the series "Art for living" is used as a base material a very fine-pored, fast-growing, African wood.
After sawing in the logs, the planks must first be checked for cracks and sorted. After that, the wood is bleached so that the colors come out more clear and beautiful after coloring. After bleaching, the wood is dried again and then cut into layers of varying thinness using state-of-the-art machines. These layers can now be dyed into any color and must be dried again after the dye bath. The individual layers are now laid in a grid to blocks on top of each other and pressed together with binder under strong pressure, over several weeks with a hot pressing, whereby the wood dries again. The irregularity of the layers gives each product a unique play of colors and patterns. Even the front and back of each piece are different.
All products in the "Art for Living" series are treated several times with our high-quality oil. If there are scratches or stains, they can be treated with fine sandpaper in the direction of the grain and the product can then be re-oiled.
The wood comes from sustainably managed, certified (FSC-SCS + PEFC) cultivation and is therefore reproducible and available. The products are food safe.
